OVI / DUI AND TRAFFIC
OVI: If you are convicted in Ohio of OVI (Operating a Vehicle under the Influence of alcohol or drugs -- formerly "DUI"), you face a number of very serious consequences. Not only could it cost you financially (think fines, court costs, reinstatement fees, etc.), but your freedom is at risk -- someone found guilty of OVI will spend anywhere from 3 to 180 days in jail. In addition, that person will lose his or her driver's license for a period of time and have 6 points added. Because the stakes are so high, it is important to be represented by an attorney with knowledge and experience in the area
DUS (Driving Under Suspension): If you are caught driving with a suspended (or no) license, you should talk to an attorney familiar with driver's license law. The process for getting your license back can be long and expensive, so get advice from someone who can help you navigate it. Just as with OVI, a DUS conviction can result in up to 180 days in jail and additional fines/costs/penalties.
Other Traffic: While the potential penalties for equipment violations, speeding, and other vehicle-related offenses may not necessarily be as serious as OVI or DUS, they nonetheless can be very costly - in terms of both money and freedom.
